Sunshine & Hot Rods
Everyone needs an occasional getaway. A little bit of R & R does a lot of good to refresh your mind and renew your strength. This past weekend was everything I needed to do just that. It was a little different R & R though. RELAXATION & RACING. Every year for our anniversary, my husband and I get away for some drag racing at Ozark Raceway Park in Rogersville, MO for the Street Machine Shootout. A little thrill and adrenaline rush from watching the fast cars and the smell of the race fuel. There was someone wearing a shirt that said, "Heaven smells like burnt rubber and race fuel." There couldn't be any truer words. It was a great weekend spent with family and friends. A few of the racers within our circle include West Family Racing, Timebomb Racing, Smyer Racing, Tellman Racing. We even had the opportunity to meet "Reaper" from Street Outlaws reality TV show. And also the owner of the Krusty Nova who participates in Drag Week.
There's a prayer for racers that says, "As I lay rubber down the street, I pray for traction I can keep. But if I spin and begin to slide, please dear God, protect my sweet ride." - Amen. Before the eliminations began on Saturday, there is a tradition at the race track for prayer and then the national anthem. Prayer for safety over the racers and fans. And thanks to God for our salvation. One other reason I enjoy drag racing is that there is a lot of good sportsmanship. The competition begins at the starting line but all in all, racers are a family. If one racer needs a part to run and another one has it, they lend it to them so they can race.
The last day of racing went by so fast. It was so hot too. I was very thankful there were mist sprayers by the Nitro Cafe. And for the first time I can ever remember, the power went out right about dark. There is a really cool picture someone took of the darkness around the tower that Ozark Raceway Park shared on their Facebook page . While some patiently waited for the electric company to come fix the issue, there were lots of conversation happening in the staging lanes. People were walking around socializing all over on the pit side of the track.
